The basics of Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy at Advanced and Preferred Physical Therapy can benefit people of all ages and covers a variety of specializations including impairments of the upper extremity (hand to shoulder), pediatrics and caregiver/family education. Occupational Therapy can help people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations) including helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.
Impairments of the upper extremity include rehabilitation of the upper limb including the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder combining the structure of the upper limb with function and activity. Therapy can begin within days of the injury or surgery, and we encourage follow up referrals even if you are referring your patient to an orthopedic specialist. Commonly treated conditions can include:

  • traumatic injuries
  • fractures and dislocations
  • sports injuries
  • tendonitis of shoulder/elbow/wrist/hand
  • medial and lateral epicondylitis
  • trigger finger
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • tendon and nerve injuries

These are all in addition to providing custom splinting and fitting for pre-fabricated splints for the upper extremity.
Pediatric OT focuses on children in their environment and uses play to improve sensory motor skills, body coordination, balance, and equilibrium. Commonly treated conditions can include:

  • developmental delays
  • down syndrome
  • sensory processing disorders
  • neurological impairments

Supports for older adults include self-care and adaptive equipment education, and commonly treated conditions can include:

  • neurological conditions/stroke
  • cognitive impairment
  • arthritis and joint protection/work simplification education
  • self-care and ADLs
