Parkinson's Treatment

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes changes in the brain and affects a person's balance, causing walking difficulties and many falling risks. Treatments, such as medications, have not been successful for these symptoms. In 2002, Lee Silverman Voice Technique (LSVT) BIG was initiated. This program, instructed by specially-trained therapists, involves large amplitude, exaggerated movement patterns, leading to safer movements and improved quality of life.

Research shows that exercise can slow, halt, and sometimes reverse the progression of Parkinson's disease. Physical therapists role in the LSVT BIG program is to make sure patients are pushing their limits and give them the tools to implement the exercise program in their home and everyday life. This assures that patient's functional daily task does not become a chore. It also allows patients to establish a baseline for their movements to track and acknowledge their functional ability to improve their quality of life.
Here at Advanced Physical Therapy, we understand that living with Parkinson's can be difficult and frustrating for the patient and their family. We hope our services can help make each patients situation easier. Contact us today for more information.
